Severe thunderstorms blow through WNY

Jamestown first responders answer dozens of calls as Tonawanda deals with uprooted trees.

TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Western New York was hit by several severe thunderstorms and floods Monday afternoon. All weather alerts have since expired or were canceled.

Around 1 p.m. on Monday, Erie County was hit with its first severe thunderstorm.

Winds of up to 60 mph were recorded and downed trees and power lines were expected.

In the city of Jamestown, a fire department official tells 2 On Your Side that they responded to dozens of calls.

"We've had 32 calls for service. 21 of them had been for flooded basements, we had three for trees, wires down with three transformer fires," said Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Coon.

The Jamestown Fire Department also had three fire alarm calls, but none of them escalated to require additional service.

Initially, it was reported that lightning had struck a building, but the fire department believes it actually struck a nearby tree.

Speculation on social media regarding stranded motorists needing rescue also turned out to be false.

There were a number of other wind damage reports and some flood and hail reports in WNY.

Storm reports after severe thunderstorms moved through during Monday afternoon.

Jamestown Police Lieutenant Samuel Piazza says a few streets quickly flooded from the sewer system that couldn't keep up with the amount of water flowing into it.

" A lot of manhole covers have blown off with the pressure of the water coming up through the sewer system," Lt. Piazza said. "Just make sure you don't drive through standing water because you could get stuck."

Jamestown Police and Fire officials say there was no significant damage as a result of the severe weather.
