BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. for all eight counties of Western New York. Here’s what you need to know to be safe.
Stay informed:
A tornado watch means to be prepared as tornadoes are possible near the area. A tornado warning means to take action and find a safe location as a tornado is near, states the American Red Cross.
Continue to monitor local news and weather reports.
Find a safe location:
Stay away from windows and large open rooms. Go to a basement, saferoom, small room, or the lowest level of a sturdy building.
RVs, mobile, and trailer homes are not safe, states the Red Cross.
If you are outside or in a car, the National Weather Service (NWS) advises you to find shelter in a sturdy building. If you are unable to find shelter, the NWS states to get down in your car and cover your head or find shelter in a low lying area, like a ditch.
After you find a safe shelter, be sure to protect your head and neck using your arms, advises the ARC.
The NWS recommends contacting family and loved ones and keeping them updated.
