The months of April and May are usually the two busiest when it comes to U.S. tornadoes. On average, that 61 day period produces about 500 twisters. But the 800+ reported this year is way over-the-top.
There are many meteorological and climatological factors that came together to produce a very violent couple of weeks in the Plains, Midwest and eventually the Ohio Valley too. But there is one factor in particular that becomes prominent this time of year in the High Plains that helped ignite several waves of these storms. It’s called a dry line.
