April 10 marks a big day on the Buffalo weather calendar. It’s the average latest date for a measurable snowfall at the airport.

That doesn’t mean we’re done for good, but it’s a good time to check in on the locally famous “Golden Snowball” award.

The Golden Snowball is a fun little bragging rights contest that was started back in the 1970s by a couple of National Weather Service meteorologists. All New York cities with a population of at least 100,000 can “compete,” but there are five spots that stand out as the “heavyweights.”

The prize (an actual trophy which currently resides in Syracuse’s city hall) typically gets passed around among Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo.

So where do we stand this year? Find out in this week’s Heather’s Weather Whys.

New episodes of Heather’s Weather Whys are posted to the WGRZ YouTube channel every Wednesday night. You can see shortened versions of each episode every Thursday on Channel 2 News at 5:30.
