If you can believe it, Groundhog Day has been a tradition in central Pennsylvania since the 1880s and the roots of the legendary rodent go all the way back to 17th century Europe.
It's all in good fun these days of course, but Phil continues to be a cultural icon in the long range forecasting world. He's made over 120 predictions! You probably won't be surprised to hear that his record isn't exactly stellar.
There are plenty of other tales of animals predicting weather and many more catchy rhymes dating back hundreds of years, which primitive observers used to try to anticipate what sort of weather may be heading their way. Some of those pieces of weather lore actually stand up to the test of modern science.
