A lot of us in Western New York like to keep St. Patrick’s Day as the hurdle to get past in order to put the worst of winter behind us. But do we actually turn a corner on the 17th? Find out in this week’s Heather’s Weather Whys.

We can define the start of spring in many ways. Meteorologists use March 1st. Astronomers use March 20. Western New Yorkers tend to use March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. Or at least a lot of people like to say that the worst of winter is behind us after parade day in downtown Buffalo.

But is there any historical merit to that idea? Does the snow really tail off? Do temperatures really rise? Find out in this week’s Heather’s Weather Whys.
