BUFFALO, N.Y. — WEATHER IMPACT ALERT ISSUED FOR SOUTHERN TIER NEXT WEEKEND
Yes, snow has fallen in the southern Tier. However, Buffalo itself hasn't seen a flake this season. This is the latest into the cold weather season the city has EVER gone without observing a single flake of snow.
This is a good time to make sure your car, your house, your wardrobe, and your family are ready for some true winter weather however.
The overall weather pattern will "flip" as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday and the Great Lakes region, which has basked in above-average temperatures for most of autumn, will now deal with below-average readings as the calendar turns to December.
Thanksgiving will not have any problematic weather for local travel around WNY with a high of around 40 on Thursday, with some light rain showers or wintry mix possible off the lake.
Next weekend we are expecting temperatures below the freezing mark, and a west to NW wind that can promote lake effect snows. As of now, the wind direction will deliver the highest snow totals in the Southern Tier, especially in the hills of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. Buffalo and its suburbs can anticipate their first real snow of the season next weekend.
It is too early to responsibly post snow estimates. Forecast models will continue to change snow timing and totals as the weekend draws nearer.
On a related note, Bills fans should prepare for the first wintry game of the 2024 season. Storm Team 2 will keep you abreast of the latest computer guidance as the long holiday weekend draws closer. Double-check your flight status, especially on Saturday and Sunday. And get ready, as our mild November abruptly transitions to a cold December.
