High winds roar through Western New York

The weekend featured record warmth, a soaking rain, and strong winds

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The High Wind Warning for parts of Western New York expired this morning.

Southwest winds reached 25 to 40 mph with gusts exceeding 60 mph. The combination of yesterday's rain, followed by the potential for strong winds, significantly increased the risk for uprooted trees, downed power lines and widespread power outages.

A wind gust of 69 mph was recorded this morning at the National Weather Service office by the airport.

From Saturday's weather file, a new record was set at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport with a temperature of 67°. That temperature beats the previous record set in 2018 of 61°.

Rainfall amounts were lower than expected but many areas picked up between 0.50 to 1" of rain.
