BUFFALO, N.Y. — With below average temperatures for mid-April and even the chance for snow, this Easter Sunday forecast will not be much better than Christmas last year.
In fact, the entire holiday weekend is going to be a bit wintry. Morning lows will make it to low 30s making for a very cold start to Easter Sunday.
With a cloudy and slightly snowy start to the day, conditions will slowly clear into the afternoon. There will be some sunshine in the afternoon with high temperatures reaching the mid 40s. The northwesterly breeze won't be gusty, but it will keep the day chilly with a wind chill making it feel like the upper 30s.
And yes, with a forecast like this it will be cooler this Easter than last Christmas for Buffalo this time around. Christmas of 2021 was a "green" holiday when the region picked up over a half an inch of rain on the holiday and temperatures rose to 50 degrees.
And while this Easter Sunday won't be record breaking in Buffalo, it could be the coolest since 2018. Weather records for this holiday actually have a large range since Easter could fall sometime between late March and late April depending on the year.
The warmest Easter on record for the city was April 18th, 1976 when it warmed to 81 degrees. On the flip side, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Easter in Buffalo was 5 degrees on April 1st, 1923. Weather records for this holiday span all the way back to 1871.
As for precipitation, it has snowed 24 times on Easter Sunday in Buffalo with at least a trace or more of snow falling on the holiday. It is more prevalent for it to rain on the holiday. There have even been tornadoes on Easter Sunday in Western New York. On April 14th, 1974 a severe thunderstorm produced a weak tornado in Chautauqua County near French Creek and caused minor damage.
