BUFFALO, N.Y. — Coastal flooding can occur often when wind speeds and gusts increase enough to push water toward the coastline. A dominant southwesterly gusty wind over Lake Erie for example can push water toward the shoreline and cause coastal flooding near and around Buffalo and areas south along the lakeshore, and even north into the Upper Niagara River. A Lakeshore Flood Watch or Warning is often issued in these cases.
