BUFFALO, N.Y. — There's less than six months before a federal deadline to get a a REAL ID or Enhanced ID.
Here's why it matters: Everyone flying in the United States will need a REAL ID, an Enhanced ID, a passport, or another form of accepted identification to fly when that deadline arrives on May 7, 2025. With that in mind, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation Security Administration are telling people to beat the rush.
What is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses, permits, and ID cards. REAL ID is a state-issued driver's license, and as such, you'll need to bring documents to the DMV to prove your identity and age. A new photograph will be snapped before the REAL ID is issued.
When is the REAL ID deadline?
Again, it's May 7, 2025. And it's not just airports that will stop accepting non-REAL ID documents as proof of identity. It will happen at security checkpoints in federal buildings.
How can I tell if I already have a REAL ID?
"If your New York State license or ID does not have a star or a flag on it, then you do not have a REAL ID-compliant document," the New York DMV said on its website.
How can I get a REAL ID?
Visit any New York State DMV office and bring certain documents. Required documents include either your passport or U.S. birth certificate; a document proving of legal presence for non-U.S. citizens; two documents showing proof of residence in New York, such as a utility bill, paycheck stub, mortgage payment, etc.; and your social security card, if you have one. The social security card is not a requirement.
How much does a REAL ID cost?
"There is no additional cost beyond the renewal fee to get a REAL ID" when it comes time for renewal of a driver's license, permit, or non-driver ID, according to the TSA.
Can you still fly domestically if you don't have a REAL ID?
An Enhanced ID that meets federal REAL ID standards will do. "An Enhanced ID costs $30 extra and can be used as identification when returning to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, and some countries in the Caribbean. A passport is also acceptable as a REAL ID-compliant document," the TSA said. A global entry card can also be used.
