NEW YORK — Electric vehicle fast charging stations are coming to major interstates across New York State.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Friday that $21 million, funded by a federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) grant, will be used for the project.

“As we make the transition away from gas-powered vehicles, New York is accelerating the number of electric vehicle fast chargers available to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality in our communities,” Governor Hochul said.

Local highways involved include I-190 and I-90.

There are specific requirements for every charging station, including that they must be able to charge at least 4 vehicles simultaneously, and that they are located within one mile of an exit. Each location must also be available for use 24/7.

Although there are many sites in the works, there are already some that exist and the program will focus on closing the gaps between those and planned stations.

They will also focus on areas that will offer restrooms and/or food, as well as multiple types of charging connectors (CCS and NACS).
