NT car vs. train update

Police responded to the crash on Witmer Road in North Tonawanda just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. — On Tuesday morning Niagara County  Sheriff's alongside North Tonawanda Police and Fire officials responded to a train vs. car accident that happened at 7a.m.

The accident was at the Witmer Rd. railroad crossing near River Rd. in the City of North Tonawanda. 

A 2021 Hyundai Elantra being driven by a 29-year-old woman had came to a full stop on the tracks facing a westerly direction. The woman driving was the only occupant in the car. 

The car was struck by a Southbound traveling Amtrack passenger train that had 11 passengers, and 3 crewmembers onboard. 

None of the people onboard the train were injured in the crash. 

The driver was transported to ECMC where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials will not be sharing the drivers name at this time pending notification of family members. 

An investigation regarding the cause of the collision is ongoing, and updates will be provided once available.
