NEW YORK — A campaign to ensure safe driving is underway across New York State amid the Labor Day holiday.
State and local law enforcement will have increased patrols and more checkpoints set up through Monday, September 2, according to Governor Kathy Hochul's office.
“We want all New Yorkers to wrap up the summer by enjoying Labor Day weekend and making memories,” Governor Hochul said in a statement.
She added: “Avoiding crashes, serious injuries and fatalities is simple; stay sober, stay alert and obey the speed limit.”
988 people were arrested for DWIs and 28,856 tickets were issued during last year's Labor Day weekend campaign.
"Impaired driving reduces reaction times and impairs judgment while speeding limits your ability to respond to sudden changes on the road," said City of Batavia Police Chief Shawn Heubusch.
Construction projects are on hold until Tuesday at 6 a.m. in an attempt to reduce roadway traffic and lane closures.
"Please celebrate responsibly, ensure you have a designated driver, and always obey speed limits to keep our roads safe for everyone," Chief Heubusch said.
