TONAWANDA, N.Y. — In just a matter of weeks, three tractor-trailers crashed into the Young Street Bridge in the City of Tonawanda.
That's when several community members reached out to 2 On Your Side, voicing their concerns.
Tonawanda resident Kristen Jopp told us in March, "We've had three trucks hit in three weeks and well over 50 in the last several years. It is ongoing and it's dangerous."
Mayor Rick Davis listened to those complaints and issued an executive order to restrict truck traffic on a certain section of the road.
"The executive order was issued on March 14 and since March 14 we have not had one tractor-trailer strike the bridge," said Captain Fredric Foels, with the City of Tonawanda Police Department.
The order included putting up additional signs, placed strategically where drivers have an option to take an alternative route.
Foels added, "We'd like to think that the signage is working. We'd like to think that the publicity about the bridge getting hit got out too and that drivers and truckers, in general, are being a little more conscious about their surroundings and their destinations."
However, people who live near Young Street are still concerned about the structure of the bridge itself after being hit so many times.
Captain Foels admits the height just isn't conducive for everyday travel.
He said, "CSX will come out and inspect the bridge, but there's not much more that CSX can do. It's a problem and they even say, "this is your problem."
Nonetheless, on a local level, something is being done to find a solution.
At this point, Foels says "So far, so good."
