Western New York gas price trends

AAA reminds drivers about tire safety and has the report for gas prices as we head into the week of June 24th.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The national average for a gallon of gas has remained the same at $3.45 since last Monday, June 17 as we head into a new week starting on Monday, June 24.

One year ago, the price for gas was $3.58. The New York State average is $3.58, down two cents from last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.70. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

  • Batavia - $3.53 (down 3 cents from last Monday)
  • Buffalo - $3.58 (down 3 cents from last Monday)
  • Elmira - $3.38 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
  • Ithaca - $3.64 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
  • Rochester - $3.61 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
  • Rome - $3.59 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
  • Syracuse - $3.55 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
  • Watertown - $3.62 (down 3 cents from last Monday)

According to AAA "Gasoline prices held steady at the national level while continuing to fall in New York, with the average for a gallon of regular down two cents from last week to $3.58. Oil prices have risen slightly this week, trading in the low to mid $80s barrel this morning. Steady oil prices, tepid demand, and increasing supply are the formula for gas prices to keep falling as summer arrives. Diesel prices are relatively steady. The national average price for diesel is $3.79, up two cents from last Monday. The New York average is $4.25, down one cent from last Monday"

They also mention that "To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle."

This week (June 24 - July 3) is also 'Tire Safety Week' and AAA is sharing information from the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) in an effort to raise awareness on safety, maintenance, summer travel, and more.

AAA reports that "To help motorists remember these important tire maintenance actions, USTMA encourages drivers to remember the acronym “P.A.R.T.”—Pressure, Alignment, Rotation, and Tread. Tire safety essentials are especially important this year as summer road trips are expected to be very popular and vehicle usage is on the rise. Americans drove more than 3.263 trillion miles in 2023, an increase of more than 67.5 billion miles compared to 2022, according to the Federal Highway Administration."
