NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. — As it starts to get darker out earlier in the afternoon, it's a good time to remember to stay vigilant while driving as deer are on the move more now than ever.
The Niagara County Sheriff's Office wanted to help share some of those reminders with the community on their social media pages for deer crossing season safety.
Some of those reminders include:
- pay close attention between sunset and sunrise;
- if you see one deer, more are typically close by;
- travel slowly through those areas where you notice deer on the shoulders of the road;
- be mindful when seeing deer crossing signs;
- always wear a seatbelt, more injuries occur when occupants are not secured; and
- remain calm, brake firmly, and stay in your lane if a deer enters the road.
More serious crashes tend to happen when an operator of a car swerves to avoid a collision with a deer, and may make contact with other vehicles or anchored objects.
