BUFFALO, N.Y. — Governor Hochul announced Monday that the state had received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency "Solar for All grant competition."
The $7B initiative by the federal government aims to provide funding for a variety solar energy projects.
New York was awarded $249,800,000 for NYSDERA to expand a low-income housing solar program.
"“With this Solar for All grant, we are proud to work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and our partners to expand our successful NY-Sun initiative," NYSERDA President Doreen Harris said. "This critical funding will allow us to provide more low-income families with clean energy while supporting our collaborative efforts to achieve a more reliable, equitable, zero-emissions electric grid.”
The federal grant will expand New York's "NY-Sun" program, a utility bill assistance program. NY homes qualify if you:
- Rent or own your home
- Are a veteran receiving disability benefits
- Are on a fixed incomeApply today
- Earn a minimum wage
- Participate in HEAP, SNAP, TANF, or other electric bill assistance programs
The state says the federal funding will allow it to build more community solar farms, and reach its zero-emission goal by 2035.
"The Inflation Reduction Act is powering a major $250 million boost in residential solar power for families across the Empire State," said Senator Chuck Schumer. "This is a win-win-win: helping New York fight climate change, lowering costs, and creating new, good-paying jobs.
