AMHERST, N.Y. — An invasive plant was found, then removed, by state wildlife officials in the Town of Amherst recently.
The plant was believed to be golden bamboo, commonly called fishing bamboo. It was found along Ellicott Creek, near Maple Road.
An officer with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation investigated the location on June 19. The officer confirmed it was golden bamboo, which is "a prohibited invasive plant in New York State that grows quickly and forms thick monocultures, preventing native plants from growing in the same area," the DEC said in a newsletter.
The officer removed and disposed of the plant.
"Prohibited invasive species cannot be knowingly possessed with the intent to sell, import, purchase, transport, or introduce. In addition, no person shall sell, import, purchase, transport, introduce, or propagate prohibited invasive species," the DEC added.
