BUFFALO, N.Y. — Some Western New Yorkers chose to celebrate Earth Day by making a positive impact in their communities.
Groundwork Buffalo hosted an "Earth Day Eve" cleanup in East Buffalo on Sunday. That's where volunteers are working to regenerate a garden on East Delevan Avenue. Once the seeds are planted, the organization said all of the produce will go right back into the community.
"After 5/14 happened, a bunch of organizations stepped up," Racheal Tarapacki, executive director of Groundwork Buffalo, told 2 On Your Side. "Groundwork Buffalo has been around before, we will be around after.
"Food is the most important. It's for our kids, so they can focus on school, it's for education, it's for health. If you look at the health issues on the East Side, they're higher than anyone else, due to having food deserts."
Groundwork Buffalo also allows kids to help with the planting, to understand where their food comes from.
