BUFFALO, N.Y. — Jessica Pegula won her first grass-surface tournament a couple of weeks ago, tuning up for Wimbledon.
A second one wasn't in the cards in London, though. The Buffalo native, ranked No. 5 in the world, lost 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-1 in the second round at Wimbledon to No. 42 Wang Xinyu on Thursday.
It was the time Xinyu beat a top-10 player during her career, according to the WTA.
"Couple of days ago I was asking my coach, 'When will this happen,' " Wang said on the court, following the match. "Jessica was really tough to play on grass. Her ball was super low and I'm just really happy I won in the end."
Pegula reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon a year ago. Next up for her will be the 2024 Paris Olympics.
