NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. — Niagara County has seen an increase in bald eagles in the area, and in an effort to help preserve the species, the Niagara County Parks Department is finding ways to help.
Niagara County Legislator for the 14th District Shawn Foti shared on social media a picture of Niagara County Parks Department workers installing a special pole for eagles to nest on at Krull Park in Olcott.
Foti said in the social post that a couple who visits Krull Park often, had noticed the lack of healthy trees for nesting, and brought it to the county's attention.
According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's website, "In forested areas, bald eagles often select the tallest trees with limbs strong enough to support a nest that can weigh more than 1,000 pounds. Nest territories typically include at least one perch with a clear view of the water, where eagles forage. Eagle nests are constructed with large sticks and may be lined with moss, grass, plant stalks, lichens, seaweed, or sod. Nests are usually about 4 to 6 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep, although larger nests exist."
The pole in Krull Park is located close to Lake Ontario's shoreline, and is certainly high up in the air.
"Let’s hope they decide to nest here and find safe habitat along the shoreline. A big thanks to our parks department staff for making this happen." Foti wrote.
