Ice rink returns to Canalside

Canalside will celebrate its 10th winter season that weekend with a live DJ, carolers and special giveaways.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The temperatures have dropped and winter is just around the corner.  And that's good news if you love the outdoor activities at Canalside. 

The Ice at Canalside will open Friday, November 24. 

Canalside will celebrate its 10th winter season that weekend with a live DJ, carolers and special giveaways. 

There will also be a free hockey shot contest, silent disco, prize wheel and food & beverage specials on Saturday, . 

New this year will be Sunday Funday, a family event at the ice rink with kids activities, ice castle bounce house and coloring on ice. 

“We are happy to be marking a decade of winter fun at Canalside,” said ECHDC President Mark Wendel. “Everyone looks forward to seeing crowds of friends and families celebrating the season on skates and ice bikes. Whether you’re an expert skater or just learning, we guarantee you will have a memorable experience at Canalside’s one-of-a-kind rink.”

 “The Ice at Canalside has become a joyful Western New York winter tradition over the last decade,” said Michael Ball, vice president, community affairs, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. “As the official health plan of Canalside, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is proud to be part of the ongoing transformation that has seen Buffalo’s beautiful waterfront flourish as a year-round destination of healthy activities, community events and lively entertainment for millions of visitors.”

Admission to the rink and skate rentals can be purchased at the Honda Winter Pavilion. Admission is $8 for people age 13 and up and $5 for children under 13 and members of the military.   Children under the age of five can skate for free.   Skate rentals cost $5, or you can bring your own. 

If ice skating is not your thing, you can try curling, the ice bikes or rent an igloo. Curling and igloos need to be reserved beforehand. 

While there is construction near Heritage Point, which is adjacent from the Canal, guest are asked to enter the rink through the elevated pedestrian walkway at the entrance of the Explore and More Children's Museum
