Keeping safe during winter and fall hunting

Keeping yourself and the nature around you safe this hunting season.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shares ways to keep outdoor activities in the woods safe.

The people who spend their time outdoors participating in activities like hunting, hiking, biking, nature photo-taking, and trapping should all take precautions.

Some simple steps to take include, wearing bright clothing so that other hunters and people can spot you easily and further away. Wearing clothes that are weather-appropriate is also a good idea.

Other tips include getting to know your trail to ensure safety and not get lost, telling friends and family your return time and whereabouts could help in case of any emergencies.

Packing essential items like food, a first-aid kit, a light source, and a map are all necessary outdoors, especially if venturing out alone.

The DEC says that hunters should avoid disturbing their surrounding wildlife by finding a less crowded area and respecting the environment.

Hunters and hikers should always be mindful of one another and if bringing a pet, keep them safe too by using bright-colored leashes or coverings.
