BUFFALO, N.Y. — The organization responsible for keeping our region's waterways clean is expanding its work.
Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper has new jurisdiction, which includes all of eastern Lake Erie and several Western New York communities, stretching all the way to the Pennsylvania border.
Local leaders say the expansion will help create access to our waterways for all Western New Yorkers.
"Our waterfront is a jewel that belongs to everyone in the city, and in this region, and it's really making sure that as we develop and grow as a city, that we also have conversations on our waterfront to make sure they remain pollutant free, and that when we have development, that it's responsible development along our waterfront," said Mitch Nowakowski, Buffalo Common Councilmember for the Fillmore District.
The expansion comes as Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper marks its 35th anniversary.
