Bat Week October 24-31

As 'Bat Week' fly's in, the DEC encourages New York State to help protect bats.

NEW YORK STATE, USA — New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is raising awareness for bats and their critical role in the environment during  Bat Week from October 24-31.

Some of the safety tips to keep in mind include staying away from caves or mines during the fall and winter, as the bats are in hibernation.

Limiting tree removals during their hibernation time could also help protect bats from being harmed.

The best thing to do if you find a bat in nature is to leave quickly, quietly and with as little disturbance as possible.

One species of bat that has been recognized to be in New York State is the "little brown bat". Other endangered species, which are protected under federal and State endangered species law can be seen as well. The northern-long eared bat, the tri-colored bat and the Indian bat are all part of that list within New York State.

According to the DEC, the more frequently bats are disturbed the less likely they are to survive the winter months. With less insects near them, their health is critical during this time.
