BUFFALO, N.Y. — Another person from Western New York will be heading to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
A two-time medal winner, Fredonia native Jenn Suhr will be at the pole vault pit. Only this time, it will be as a coach and not as an athlete.
Brynn King from Roberts Wesleyan University in Rochester punched her ticket to Paris on Sunday night, finishing third in the women's pole vault at the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore. King cleared a personal-best 4.73 meters (15 feet, 6.25 inches) to qualify. King is a native of Woodlands, Texas, and had previously attended Duke University.
The top three women, who are all going to Paris, finished with the same height. Bridget Williams won the event, and Katie Moon placed second.
Sandi Morris, who also cleared the Olympic standard, finished fourth on Sunday and missed the cut at 4.68 meters (15 feet, 4.25 inches). Morris was the silver medalist in the pole vault in the 2016 Olympics and is a three-time World Championship silver medalist.
Suhr won the silver medal in Beijing (2008) and the gold medal in London (2012), but she came up short after becoming ill in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Suhr joined the coaching ranks at her alma mater, Roberts Wesleyan, last year as the school's assistant track and field team coach. She recruited King to come to Roberts Wesleyan University this year as a fifth-year senior.
The women's pole vault competition is scheduled for 4:40 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, with the finals at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.
