PARIS, France — Wednesday, April 17 marks exactly 100 days until the 2024 Summer Olympics begin in Paris, France.
Many fans will be tuning in to cheer on their favorite teams, and sporting events but this year's games will bring some new events to root for too.
Newly introduced sports to the Olympics include
- Breaking, a style of dance that originated in the Bronx in the 1970s. This event will be only for the 2024 games and will not return in 2028, according to the NBC Olympics webpage.
- Surfing, this will be the sport's second debut after first appearing in Tokyo's 2020 games. The event this year though will not be happening in Paris but rather in the Island of Tahiti in French Polynesia which is known for challenging waves.
- Skateboarding, this will be the sport's second debut after first appearing in Tokyo's 2020 games.
- Sport Climbing, this will be the sports second debut after first appearing in Tokyo's 2020 games. There will be a new format though for Paris offering two events rather than one for climbers.
- 3x3 Basketball, this will be the sports second debut after first appearing in Tokyo's 2020 games.
- Kayak Cross, will be featured for the first time. Four athletes race against each other from a ramp above the water.
The Paris Olympics will also be making some changes to past events, and setting new standards.
Changes include:
- Men now included in artistic swimming
- A new weight class added to women's boxing
- Marathon race walk mixed relay replacing men's 50km race walk

The opening ceremony for the Olympics will begin on Friday, July 26 at noon (ET). The Olympics offer 39 sports, 329 events, and expect to see 10,500 athletes in attendance.
Fans can watch a live broadcast of the games on NBC and WGRZ, or stream it via Peacock, NBCOlympics.com, NBC.com and the NBC/NBC Sports apps. Spanish-language coverage of the Opening Ceremony will air on Telemundo starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
Paris has previously hosted the games in 1900, and 1924. The next host of the summer Olympics in 2028 will be Los Angles, California.
