RALEIGH, N.C. — The Buffalo Sabres headed into tonight with a two-game win streak on the road but fell just short of carrying on the streak as the Carolina Hurricanes took this one 3-2 in overtime.
Both teams opened the scoring for their clubs with unassisted goals. Carolina scored first tonight about halfway through the first period, as defenseman Tony DeAngelo put one in past goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen on the powerplay.
Buffalo would not get on the board until earlier in the second period when Alex Tuch netted one in for the Sabres.
Both teams would then go into the third period tied at one. This changed roughly seven minutes into the last period of regulation as Brady Skeij sneaked one past Luukkonen.
The Sabres answered almost immediately though, as Rasmus Dahlin scored on the powerplay just one minute and twenty-nine seconds after the Hurricanes regained the lead.
Both teams would only find the back of the net twice during regulation, taking this game to overtime.
Buffalo had their chances early on in overtime but found themselves caught on a long change. The Hurricanes took advantage of the worn-out Sabres unit, as Martin Necas tipped one as Carolina earned their eighth win of the season.
Buffalo is back in action on Friday as they host the Minnesota Wild at 7 p.m. at the KeyBank Center.
