ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Josh Allen, in his first game since announcing his engagement, scored a touchdown during the Bills' 35-10 win on Sunday night that defied all explanation.
The first-and-goal play from the 49ers' 7-yard line seemed simple enough. The Buffalo Bills quarterback completed a short pass to the left to wide receiver Amari Cooper, who appeared to be stopped by a group San Francisco defenders.
Except Cooper pitched it back to a sprinting Allen, whose rushing instincts kicked in. He broke one tackle, ran toward the end zone, then extended the football, which hit the pylon. It became of the more memorable touchdowns Allen has scored, and he's had quite a few of them since arriving in Orchard Park in 2018.
Officially, Allen received credit for 7 receiving yards and a touchdown — but no catch.
That touchdown extended the Bills' lead to 28-3 in the third quarter, in the snow, at Highmark Stadium. It also put him in the NFL record book as the first player to record a passing, rushing, and receiving touchdown, all in the same game.
Allen added an 8-yard touchdown run with 12 minutes, 31 seconds left the fourth quarter, sending the crowd into a frenzy once again.
On the Bills' next drive, with the Bills leading 35-10 in the fourth quarter, Allen took a seat as Mitch Trubisky entered the game. Allen completed 13 of 17 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He ran three times for 18 yards and a touchdown, and of course, there was that highlight-reel receiving score.
