Meet The Mafia: "Bills Dad"

You've heard the songs, now it's time to meet the man whose won his way into the hearts of the Bills Mafia. Our Meet The Mafia series continues with the story of Bills Dad.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dick DeGroat was once a professional musician, who grew up with a love for bands like Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire.

But when DeGroat writes his own songs as "Bills Dad," its his sillier, goofier side that comes out.

"Originally it was a text to my children, because we get together and watch the games on Sunday, and I was inviting them over like we do every time," said DeGroat. It was Week 1, against the New York Jets. "I decided to do it in a song, just because I'm goofy, and I said 'C-C-C-Can we beat the Jets?' My girls of course thought it was 'Eh nice, okay,' they think I'm crazy anyway... But a buddy of mine saw it, and he said 'Just put it on Facebook.' Boom, thing went crazy."

Bills fans everywhere were drawn to DeGroat's silly song so much, they began demanding a new one each week, even when the Bills were on their bye week.

But one of his favorites, and perhaps most popular, songs came the day before Week 17 of the 2017 season.

You remember that week, right?

DeGroat sure does, and he brought his family members into the video that week to try and bring as much luck as possible toward ending the Bills' 17-year playoff drought.

"It's 2017, the drought is over, it's playoff time," DeGroat sang in the video.

Sure enough, the song came true, another boost of energy for Bills Dad to continue recording new songs each week thereafter.

"I know what good music is like. I know what I'm producing is not the kind of thing you'd normally put out there," laughed DeGroat. "But for some reason people like to see an old guy with the raw footage from his basement bar, singing a song because I love my Buffalo Bills."

Eventually, DeGroat's song began leading to charitable contributions.

Whether it was shout-outs to people in need, or proceeds sent to the Pancreatic Cancer Association of Western New York or the Kidney Foundation, DeGroat's songs took on the spirit of giving.

"I actually raffled off my jersey," smiled DeGroat. "I never thought anybody would want my old ... But somebody gave me $250 for the Kidney Foundation."

His own daughter Olivia even told him during halftime of a Bills game that she planed to donate her kidney as well.

But whether it's a kidney, a donation, or something as simple as a smile, DeGroat loves nothing more than using his silly songs to do some good.

"I get notes from people all the time, maybe this is the first time they smiled or the first time they laughed all week," DeGroat Beams. "That means a lot to me, that I'm able to spread the love a little bit."
