McGovern snapping back into home at center for Bills

While snap issues have surfaced early, the move back inside earning positive reviews at Bills training camp.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Connor McGovern giving his own progress report for his move from guard to center.

"I think it's going really well right now," McGovern said after training camp practice Sunday afternoon. "Me and Josh are getting comfortable with each other. For a while he was used to how Mitch snaped it. Mitch tended to snap it to his left. That was just how Josh was used to it.

"So this whole offseason we've been working, trying to train him to come back to the center and I think we're just starting to click and we're finally starting to gel together."

The transition has not been seamless, with poor snaps noticeable throughout the early camp practices.

"I know the snaps have been mentioned and that's real," coach Sean McDermott said Sunday morning. "We've got to continue to work through that and I'm confident those guys will do that. Both are pros and it means a lot to both those guys."

McGovern added: "It's just getting used to the live reps, just full speed. You can practice as much as you want without someone over top of you, but as soon as you get a tilted shade that's trying to jump right down your face, it's a little bit different. Just trying to get used to that again. Luckily I think that's in the past now and we're finally starting to click and we're really comfortable with each other."

Snapping the ball only part of McGovern's job at center.

That position also carrying a large responsibility as the lead communicator of the entire offensive line, making calls and checks to the rest of that group.

If getting the ball to Allen has been a work in progress, the other aspect has been completely natural.

"Connor's a leader on our football team," McDermott said. "A leader on our offense. I count on him for a ton. The communication that's unfolded this offseason and now into training camp has been impressive and that's important for an offense. Everyone's on the same page pre-snap, that we can execute when the ball's snapped."

"Right now where we're at is better than any point last year," McGovern said. "Just how all five of us are communicating, making sure we're all on the same page. Then turn back and talking to Josh and he's correcting us or making sure the calls are correct. Tackles are doing a great job. If we alert anything, they're communicating to wide receivers if they have to go down to mike point. Just make sure everyone's on the same page.

"I feel like last year a lot of times the five of us might've known what we're doing, but we didn't communicate enough to the tight ends or wide receivers or Josh might've been in something else. But I think we did a great job, especially Joe Brady, getting us all together and making sure we're all on the same page."
