Former Bills punter Matt Araiza signs with Kansas City Chiefs

The former Bills punter has not played in the NFL since August of 2022.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Araiza is signing with AFC rival Kansas City Chiefs.

In a social media post, Araiza's agency JL Sports announced the news on Thursday afternoon.

The agency said, "We are proud to announce that our client Matt Araiza has signed with the (Kansas City) Chiefs. We are grateful to Brett Veach, Coach Reid, and the Chiefs organization for giving Matt this opportunity."

They continued, "Matt has been to hell and back in the last 18 months. He has handled himself with grace ... and humility that is truly inspiring."

In a separate post on the agency's X page, Araiza himself said, "I am proud and honored to sign a contract with the Chiefs. I am thrilled to be able to continue my NFL career."

Araiza has not played in the NFL since August of 2022, when the Bills made the decision to cut ties with their sixth-round draft pick out of San Diego State. He was accused of taking part in a gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in October of 2021.

The San Diego District Attorney decided in December of 2022 to not press criminal charges against Araiza, who had a lawsuit filed by a woman against him and two other former SDSU players. The women alleged in the suit that Araiza, then 21, had sex with her in a side yard at an off-campus house before bringing her into a bedroom where a group of men took turns raping her.
