DeWayne Carter gaining confidence during first training camp with Bills

The Bills third-round pick is learning from fellow defensive tackles as he prepares for his preseason debut.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The transition from college to the pros has been a steady progression for DeWayne Carter.

“Confidence comes with reps," Carter said after training camp practice Wednesday. "At first, you first get here, this is the highest league in the world. The best you can play. It’s almost a little intimidating at first. You come in spring ball and OTAs, kind of, I don’t want to say timid, but with a lot of questions. So you got those answered throughout camp and I feel like my confidence is continuing to grow each day.”

The 3rd round pick out of Duke is one of many new players at the defensive tackle position for the Bills.

Carter's learning curve was helped by the two main holdovers - Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones.

“I honestly couldn’t do it without them," Carter said. "I’ve grown every day because of them. Them and the other guys in the room as well. They’re always looking to give me tips, whether it’s in the meeting room, out here on the field. We could be at dinner and they’ll say something that they saw on film or show me a play and see where I can improve. Kind of help me set goals for myself to put me on the right track because obviously, those guys are very talented, but they work hard, they’re smart, and they’ve been in this league for quite a long time. The sustained success that I want to achieve.”

The rookie feels his game has really gotten more comfortable at this level since the pads came on, a change Carter called his first true NFL moment.

Another is upcoming, with the Bills opening preseason action this weekend.

Most rookies see a good amount of playing time in those games, which Carter is ready for.

“Expectation is to go out there, fly around, and have fun," Carter said. "No regrets. No timidness. Just go out there and play ball. At the end of the day, it’s football. We’re at the highest level, but it’s football at the end of the day. I prepare well, my coaches have prepared me, so I’m just excited to get out there and fly around. Showcase what we’re going to be this year.”

The Bills host the Bears this Saturday at 1 pm.
