Bills' Coleman gets 'a little taste' of the NFL in preseason debut

The second-round rookie receiver suited up for the first time against another team, saying "it was great to get out there and compete against somebody else."

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Keon Coleman’s first time experiencing an NFL game in Orchard Park is in the books.

“It was great, kind of got a feel for that at the Red and Blue game but it was great to get out there and compete against somebody else,” Coleman said.

The rookie receiver approached Saturday’s preseason opener with a business-like attitude.

“I wouldn’t say feel nothing, really I’ve got a job to do,” Coleman said. “Come in and make plays and help us win, and I’m eager to do that everyday.”

While the Bills did not get the win in a 33-6 loss to the Bears, the second-round pick did get into the box score in his limited snaps, hauling in an 8-yard pass from Mitch Trubisky in the second quarter for his first catch as a Bill.

“I thought he looked comfortable,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said. “I thought he looked like it wasn’t too big for him, and that’s part of being a young player and adjusting. That didn’t surprise me though because I’d say he’s been taking things in stride in that way.”

That includes the plays that don’t also go his way. Coleman had one catch on three targets, with the two incompletions coming on the same drive in the red zone.

However, his QB1, Josh Allen, liked how Coleman didn’t let a quiet day stat-wise impact him on the field.

“Energy was great, catching a first down there early in the second quarter,” Allen said. “Thought we had a couple chances in the end zone there, albeit he did a good job of breaking one up in the end zone. Again, I thought the energy was there. He was very attentive on the sideline.”

Coleman now is looking forward to what lays head after getting a small appetizer of NFL action.

“It was a little taste, I think like two drives but I’m look forward to everything else that’s going to come in the regular season and the rest of the preseason,” Coleman said.
