ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Nyheim Hines was supposed to be the first Bills player to the No. 0 on the field.
That was before he suffered a serious knee injury last July while on stationary Jet Ski when he was struck by someone else on another Jet Ski. The injury required surgery, and he never played another down for the Bills.
So rather than Hines — who scored one of the more memorable and emotional touchdowns in Bills history — it's now going to wide receiver Keon Coleman who could become the first Bills player to don No. 0 in a game.
After Hines got hurt, 22 players across the NFL wore No. 0, according to the Sporting News. The fact they they were able to wear the number at all came about because of an NFL rules change, allowing "defensive backs, tight ends, wide receivers, running backs, fullbacks, H-backs, and linebackers to choose from a wider range of available numbers, including single digit numbers."
