30 years apart, Buffalo will host the Chiefs in a playoff game

This will be the Chiefs' first postseason game in Orchard Park since Jan. 23, 1994, when Buffalo won 30-13 in the AFC championship game.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs aren't lacking when it comes to postseason meetings in recent years.

The Chiefs won in the AFC championship game in January of 2021, then beat the Bills again the next year in a divisional round game, known as the infamous "13 Seconds" game.

But those games were played at Arrowhead Stadium, and at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Kansas City be the road team in the playoffs for the first time in quarterback Patrick Mahomes' prolific career.

In fact, this will be the Chiefs' postseason game at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park since Jan. 23, 1994, when Buffalo won 30-13 in the AFC championship game to reach another Super Bowl.

That game brings back bad memories for Chiefs fans, who saw Joe Montana get knocked out of the game with a concussion. He completed only 9 of 23 passes for 125 yards, threw an interception, and was sacked twice.

In relief, backup quarterback Dave Krieg finished 16-of-29 passing for 198 yards with an interception and was sacked twice in a game that Buffalo put out of reach with 10 fourth-quarter points.

The Bills' offensive star that day was running back Thurman Thomas, who carried the ball 33 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Jim Kelly completed 17 of 27 passes for 160 yards.

The next week, the Bills lost by the same score, 30-13, to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII.

This week's game marks the third time Josh Allen and Mahomes will meet in the NFL postseason. Overall, they've met seven times since the start of the 2020 season.
