Longtime Bills announcer to be inducted into New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame

John Murphy, longtime voice of the Bills, was selected for the NYSBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Longtime Buffalo Bills radio play-by-play announcer John Murphy has been selected as one of six new inductees into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Murphy has spent more than 35 years with the Bills, working with their radio broadcast crew. He is most commonly known for his electric calls as the play-by-play voice of the team, which he did from 2003 through 2022.

He began his career in Buffalo as a color analyst, working alongside the iconic Van Miller in 1984. Once Miller retired in 2002, Murphy then assumed his role.

Murphy's career spans far beyond the Bills though, as he would also perform play-by-play for University at Buffalo football, Canisius and Niagara University basketball, and Buffalo Bisons baseball.

His first play-by-play stint was as a high school football announcer at a radio station in Lockport.

To add to his list of accomplishments, Murphy has won many awards during the span of his career, including a citation from the Associated Press of New York State for Best Sports Coverage for WBEN Radio.

The induction ceremony will be held in New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024.
