ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Sunday night’s matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs had as much anticipation as a playoff matchup.
Two of the top teams in the AFC — with years of history — squared off in what many described as the game of the year.
But with all the bad blood between the two teams, 2 On Your Side hit the Highmark Stadium tailgate lots beforehand to ask a simple question: Can Bills Mafia be civil and say something nice about the Chiefs?
Many Bills fans avoided the question altogether.
“I don't want to say anything that'll get me in trouble. This will be on TV, right?” one fan said.
Others used our question as an opportunity to poke fun at their opponent. A few pointed to Patrick Mahomes’ voice, which many say sounds like Kermit The Frog, with one fan even bringing a Kermit puppet dressed in a Mahomes jersey. Others hinted at a relationship between the Chiefs and the NFL’s referees.
“I've heard the refs say that they kiss really good,” one fan said.
Many fans had more nice things to say about Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s girlfriend Taylor Swift than about her boyfriend’s team.
“The Chiefs are a great team because Taylor's boyfriend's on it,” Bills fan Elizabeth Kerr said.
But as the day went on, some Bills fans accepted the challenge.
“They’re a good team. They’re a really good team,” one Bills fan said.
“Patrick Mahomes is a great guy, great charities, great man,” another added.
And a handful of Chiefs fans returned the favor.
“I love Buffalo. I love Josh Allen. I think they’ve got a great fan base,” a Chiefs fan told 2 On Your Side. “One day they deserve to win a Super Bowl, just not this year.”
