ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — For the first time since 2019, the Buffalo Bills are working in a new starting center.
Connor McGovern is taking over for Mitch Morse, who started a total of 87 games and made a Pro Bowl over five seasons snapping to Josh Allen.
McGovern is sliding in from guard, but calls center his natural position. While his heart may feel that way, it's been a minute since McGovern was in the middle. He last played there just once his final season at Penn State in 2018.
St. John Fisher is the setting to see how quickly and seamless the move back home truly is.
There are the mechanics of snapping with Allen, who has already said there's a difference in that area from how Morse did it to McGovern.
Then there's the communication component with the rest of the offensive line, with the center making most if not all of the calls.
Luckily McGovern's already familiar with most of the rest of the line.
The only newcomer will be his replacement at left guard. David Edwards is the early front-runner, but I definitely think he can be pushed by others throughout camp.
So keep an eye there while also sliding the other one over to what Connor McGovern's doing at center, and if his play can back up what his heart wants.
