Bills hold off late push by Chiefs for 20-17 win

The Bills improved to 7-6 and earned their 2nd road win of the season against Kansas City on Sunday afternoon.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After returning from a bye week, the Buffalo Bills had a huge matchup in Kansas City on Sunday afternoon as they tried to stay alive in the hunt for a wild-card spot.

A late field goal and a defensive stop helped keep the Bills ahead of Kansas City, as the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs at the end of regulation giving Buffalo the win 20-17.

Tyler Bass kicked a 39-yard field goal to give the Bills a 20-17 lead with 1 minute, 54 seconds left in the game. Stefon Diggs had dropped a short screen pass, and then Allen threw incomplete to Diggs in the end zone earlier in the drive when the Bills opted to go to the air rather than run to take time off the clock.

Kansas City's Harrison Butker tied the game with a 27-yard field goal after the Bills could not take advantage of a Chiefs fumble on the previous series.

After the Bills had extended their lead to 17-7 with a Tyler Bass 31-yard field goal in the third quarter, Mahomes drove the Chiefs 75 yards in nine plays and found Rashee Rice for the 4-yard touchdown.

Mahomes led Kansas City on a 9-play 52-yard scoring drive late in the half that was capped by a Jerick McKinnon 7-yard touchdown run. That cut the Buffalo lead to 14-7 after Josh Allen had thrown an interception.

Allen ran for a 6-yard touchdown in the second quarter and connected with running back James Cook on a 25-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give Buffalo an early 7-0 lead.

Cook ran for 15 yards in the first half and also had five receptions for 83 yards, including a touchdown reception.

Bills defensive end AJ Epenesa had a first-quarter interception for Buffalo, and then left the game a short time later with a rib injury.

Buffalo safety Micah Hyde was announced as questionable to return after he suffered a stinger late in the first half.
