ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — It appears Chase Claypool's time in Buffalo may come to an end before ever playing a down for the Bills.
The Bills placed Claypool on injured reserve Tuesday amid a series of moves that included the signing of quarterback Ben DiNucci. The team also announced the placing of QB Shane Buechele on IR, the signings of wide receivers Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain, and the waiving of wide receiver Bryan Thompson.
Claypool had looked to revitalize his career in Buffalo after making minimal impact in his previous two stops in Miami and Chicago. However, a toe injury kept Claypool out for much of training camp, and he did not appear in the Bills' 33-6 preseason-opening loss to the Bears on Saturday.
That game also saw Buechele suffer a neck injury according to head coach Sean McDermott on Monday. DiNucci's signing provides the Bills with quarterback depth behind Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky and another signal caller to field for Saturday's preseason game in Pittsburgh. With Buechele injured and Trubisky out of practice for personal reasons, Allen was the only Bills quarterback to throw passes at Monday's practice.
DiNucci has played in three regular season games, making one start with Dallas in 2020. The former 7th round pick also started 10 games for the XFL's Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023.
Byrd joins Buffalo having most recently been with Washington during this offseason. He caught 13 catches for 238 yards and two touchdowns two seasons ago with Atlanta, but saw his best season come in New England in 2020, totalling 47 catches for 604 yards.
Cain meanwhile has appeared in 15 games in his career, but most recently was part of the UFL's Birmingham Stallions championship winning team this past season.
