BUFFALO, N.Y. — A local standout heard his name called Monday in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Canisius outfielder Jackson Strong was selected in the 7th round with the 206th overall pick by the Detroit Tigers.
Strong, a West Seneca native, is coming off a season in which he hit .350 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI, and included his second straight All-MAAC First Team honor.
The graduate of West Seneca East becomes the 16th player from Canisius to be selected in the MLB Draft. The most recent was just last year, when pitcher Matt Duffy was taken in the 4th round by the Boston Red Sox.
Strong will have a decision to make now with whether to turn pro, or return to the college game. The outfielder committed to SEC program Kentucky last month. The assigned slot value for the 206th pick is $276,700, though players can sign for more or less than that value.
