LEWISTON, N.Y. — The Niagara University Baseball team is headed to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Baseball regional.
After winning their first MAAC Championship in program history on Saturday, the Purple Eagles found out on Monday afternoon that they'll be headed to Oklahoma to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
It will be Niagara Baseball's first-ever NCAA tournament game. Purple Eagles baseball head coach and MAAC coach of the year Rob McCoy says his team is different.
"The thing that makes this team special is that I really couldn't run out of words to use," he said. "They're special in every single way and I could list a million words to describe how great they are."
"Just good human beings," McCoy said. "The leadership, the grit they have, the love that they have for eachother, we talk about those things everyday. They embody that better than any team I've ever had, and so that’s why we’re getting what we've never gotten before."
Florida and Nebraska are the other teams in the Stillwater Regional. It is a double-elimination tournament. The winner will advance to the super regionals.
The first game between the Cowboys and the Purple Eagles is on Friday at 6 p.m.
