Buffalo athletes row for gold in Ontario: here's how to cheer them on

It's one of the oldest rowing events in North America- and local teams are competing against more than 150 rowing clubs from across the globe.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — While Team USA rowers are making history in Paris, local athletes are competing for gold just a few miles away from Buffalo.

Happening now through Aug. 4 is the 140th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta- one of North America's largest premier rowing events for athletes of all ages. 

The race attracts over 3,000 athletes and 150 rowing clubs each year to compete at the St. Catharines course. 

Local teams from Row Buffalo and West Side Rowing Club are set to compete starting today in several events including the men's and women's championship eight, women's under 23 eight, and men's under 23 eight.

Royal Canadian Henley attracts athletes from around the world, including club teams from Argentina and Mexico, in addition to clubs from across the United States and Canada. Events include athletes of all ages, from under 17 to over 50 in grandmaster races.

Spectators can cheer on athletes through Sunday at the racecourse located at Martindale Pond in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

St. Catharines will prepare to host the World Rowing Championships when Royal Canadian Henley concludes, beginning August 18.
