Todd, Nevins take home Porter Cup victories

A pair of Western New York natives came away with top-10 finishes in the 65th edition of the event, taking place at Niagara Falls Country Club.

LEWISTON, N.Y. — The 65th edition of the Porter Cup, one of the top amateur events in golf, is in the books at Niagara Falls Country Club.

On the men's side, Chase Nevins of Great Falls, Va., finished the tournament at 11 under par to earn the victory. Nevins entered the final hole tied with Tonawanda native and Canisius University golfer Ryan Edholm, but Edholm made bogey while Nevins made par to take home the win.

"I came in here playing well, but I hadn't played a tournament in a little bit," Nevins said. "It's always different when you test your game when you're in a tournament. Pressure, I'm always trying to simulate that when I'm at home, but you don't really know until you come out here, so just to play three solid days and then today just to hit some clutch shots when I needed to was really fun."

Edholm, a junior at Canisius, finished in a tie for second at 10 under par. After an opening-round 69, a second-round 65 vaulted him toward the top of the leaderboard, remaining in contention for the rest of the tournament.

"Just an awesome week," Edholm said. "It was fun the whole way. To come up short obviously stinks, but to play that well, it was pretty cool. To have the crowd on my side, hometown event, it was pretty nice."

On the women's side, Kendall Todd of Litchfield Park, Ariz., delivered her best round when it mattered most. She finished at 5 under to take home the win, two strokes ahead of Nicole Gal of Oakville, Ontario. Todd shot a final-round 67, two strokes better than anyone else in the field on Saturday.

"(I) was able to make some putts, and stay consistent and got the win," Todd said. "I didn't finish great after day two, but I was able to stay positive and keep it going into day three and just stay happy."

Clarence Center native Victoria Leach earned herself a top-10 finish, landing in a three-player tie for seventh with a score of 10 over par.
