Orchard Park duo continue legacy of pole vault success

OPHS has had a sectional champ in the event each of the last six years. That streak continued this year with Abi Bernas and Anthony Mancabelli.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Orchard Park pole vaulters Abi Bernas and Anthony Mancabelli have very different journeys in the sport.

Bernas has a background in gymnastics and just two years after picking up the sport, is committed to UConn.

“It was fun to get back in the air and off the ground again,” Bernas said. “I tried it later than most people do, but I tried it and fell and love."

Meanwhile, Mancabelli has pole vaulting in his blood.

“It’s just perfect, I love being in a family with other extraordinary athletes,” Mancabelli said.

That includes Chuck Mancabelli, also known as Coach Mac, who trains both Abi, and his son Anthony.

“I’m never worried to go to practice, like what is my coach going to say. That’s my dad,” Anthony said.

While Anthony’s and Abi’s paths may be different, Coach Mac says they both have what it takes to succeed in the sport.

“I don’t want to throw them under the bus here, but Dwight Stone says you have to be crazy and you have to be fearless,” Chuck said.

“Well, I’m definitely crazy,” Anthony said.

“Obviously you have to be a little crazy to fling yourself off the ground with a stick,” Barnas said.

But it’s something both pole vaulters do well, each claiming Section VI titles this year, continuing a six year section title streak for OP. Mancabelli cleared 13 feet, 7 inches, and Bernas set a personal record of 11-6.

Now, both head off to states, Anthony for the first time and Abi for a second time.

“It’s wonderful to see them succeed in any way whatsoever, especially to peak or do really good on the biggest stage,” said Orchard Park girls varsity track and field coach Christopher Betrus.

And as both look to reach new heights, they continue to make the Orchard Park program proud.

“It’s nice to know we’re continuing a legacy and hopefully it’ll continue on after that,” Anthony said.
