BUFFALO, N.Y. — Nominations for Project Play Western New York's coaches awards are now open for individuals and organizations from all eight counties of WNY. Until August 31, Project Play is accepting nominations on behalf of youth sports coaches from non-scholastic programs.
"A positive youth experience can make a tremendous difference in a child's life," said Aaron Hord, director of Project Play WNY. Two prestigious awards- the Coaches Honor Roll Award and Dick Gallagher Lifetime Achievement Award- will recognize the efforts and impact made by local coaches.
Dick Gallagher's legacy in the WNY high school sports community lives on through his Lifetime Achievement Award- recognizing an individual who has used their platform to advocate for student athletes on and off the field, for at least 10 years. This award honors the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame inductee, his immeasurable impact on a community of athletes and sports fans, and his advocacy for those struggling with addiction.
The Coaches Honor Roll Award celebrates the qualities of a youth sports coach who promotes youth development, sportsmanship, and demonstrates leadership.
Separate nominations from two or more individuals are required for a coach to be considered for the Coaches Honor Roll Award.
“If coaches can focus on the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of the whole child, then they can help youth athletes feel safe and supported, foster important traits such as responsibility and perseverance, and guide them in building an emotional foundation for success," said Hord.
Winners of both awards will be announced this fall and recognized at Highmark Stadium in October at the annual Thank You Coach event, in partnership with the Buffalo Bills.
