NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. — As high school sports get into full swing this fall season, the Buffalo Bills are bringing back their yearly 'Coaches of the Week' award.
"Each coach will receive $1,000 for their teams. Coaches were selected for their work in their school community and the impact that they have on their student athletes. Each region's Coach of the Year will be named during the Week 17 game against the New York Jets and will receive an additional $1,000 for their programs." the Bills weekly article reads.
In week 2, a Niagara County coach was chosen, alongside a coach from Geneseo.
Coach Chuck Nagel from Newfane Senior High School was chosen after the Panthers upset local rival the Medina mustangs in a 23-6 win.
Nagel told the Bills ""That was the best week of football practice I have ever had as a coach," He said. "Our boys competed, they listened, they were extremely coachable, and they are hungry."
This had been the Medina mustangs first league-loss since 2019, bringing the Newfane panthers out on top.
"This is huge for a small-town program like us," Nagel said in the article. "Medina has run this division for the last five years. It's a huge steppingstone to get that off our backs."
"I chose to be a coach because it allows me to be a part of the game I love, but can no longer play," Nagel said. "It satisfies the competitive fire I have and allows me to help young people from my hometown learn and love the game as much as I do."
Newfane has won the Class "B" championships under Nagel in both 2018 and a class B-4 title in 2019.
"Off the field, Nagel and his team participate in community service. Over the summer after a weight training day, they volunteered to help a single mom clear all the debris from a tree that had fallen in her yard."
