BUFFALO, N.Y. — There is a new king of scoring in Western New York high school basketball.
Bishop Timon senior guard Jaiden Harrison entered Friday night's game against Canisius needing just 16 points to break the all-time WNY scoring record of 2,376 points set by Cheektowaga's Dom Welch.
The main goal on the mind though was picking up a big league win on the road.
"I wasn't really thinking about the record," Harrison said. "Let's just get the win, the record is going to come with it."
And it did.
Harrison's record setting basket came on a three point basket in the fourth quarter, part of a 23-point performance that helped lead Timon to a 75-61 win.
After Harrison's shot for the record books, the game was paused to honor Harrison's achievement on the court.
"It's a great feeling," Harrison said after the game. "It's an awesome feeling to be the all-time leading scorer in the city I was born and raised (in). This feeling is still kicking in. We got the win, that's what I'm mainly happy about. The record, that's going to settle in as more time goes on, but getting that win was big for us."
The history was made in front of a packed house at Canisius, with fans eager to see Harrison write his name in the record books.
"This is what high school basketball is all about," Harrison said. "The atmosphere like this... this is what you work for, playing in front of a crowd like this. Can't even hear yourself talking, this is what high school basketball is all about. That's the beauty of it."
A big crowd, for a big moment in WNY basketball. One that will continue to settle in for Harrison, who will now look to add to his mark of 2,382 points.
"It was a special night. I feel really blessed right now. The more we talk about it, the more you guys make me understand that I just did something very special."
